Apprenticeship/Level 3 Business Administrator
At Zenith, we believe in spotting potential, and Rachel is a perfect example of what happens when you do. Recruited directly by Zenith, supported through her apprenticeship in-house, and now a permanent member of our team, Rachel has passed her Business Administrator apprenticeship with a Distinction and continues to thrive in her role as Data & Compliance Administrator.
Starting from Scratch
When Rachel Ross joined Zenith as an apprentice, she was stepping into completely unfamiliar territory. She had never worked full-time before, had no experience in an office environment, and knew very little about Quality and Compliance. Her only prior work experience was waitressing part-time, a world away from spreadsheets, compliance checklists, and data management.
But Rachel had something that mattered more than experience: the desire to learn. She chose the Business Administrator apprenticeship because she wanted genuine, hands-on exposure to professional life and she was determined to make the most of every opportunity it offered.
I saw this as an opportunity to learn, develop, and gain experience that would help me in my future career. I wasn't sure what career I wanted, so I felt this role was quite broad and would open opportunities for me and help me figure out what I enjoy most."
Rising to the Challenge
Rachel’s journey wasn’t without its difficulties. Early in her apprenticeship, the two colleagues she worked most closely with in the Quality and Compliance team became unavailable at the same time — one went on sick leave, the other left the organisation. For a newcomer still finding her footing, this could have been overwhelming.
Instead, Rachel stepped up. She stayed organised, communicated proactively with her manager, and took the initiative to understand processes more deeply rather than wait to be told what to do. Her colleagues took notice — and when Employee of the Month was awarded not long after, it was Rachel who received it.
Growing Into the Role
As the months passed, Rachel’s responsibilities steadily grew. She took ownership of compliance tasks that required real precision, quality-checking learner paperwork, completing compliance checklists, maintaining accurate records, and managing sensitive data in line with GDPR requirements. She became the person responsible for securing the Quality and Compliance cupboard and storing the key safely, a small detail that speaks to the level of trust she had earned.
Beyond the day-to-day, Rachel threw herself into the wider opportunities the apprenticeship offered. She completed an Emergency First Aid at Work course, a Digital Marketing session, a Life Skills workshop, and took part in an AI Focus Group exploring how artificial intelligence could be used practically within her role. She also completed Mandatory Training covering Equality, GDPR, Health and Safety, and Safeguarding, building a broad and well-rounded professional foundation.
One of the most significant milestones came when Rachel completed her mini project: planning, managing, and presenting a piece of work from start to finish in front of colleagues. For someone who had started the apprenticeship nervous about answering the phone, standing up and presenting to a group was a real mark of how far she had come.
Skills Developed
By the end of her apprenticeship, Rachel had developed a genuinely impressive range of professional skills, all built through real work, in a real organisation. These include:
- Data accuracy and attention to detail
- Compliance and GDPR awareness
- Time management and prioritisation
- Professional written and verbal communication
- Problem-solving under pressure
- Microsoft Office – Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Decision-making and ethical judgement
- Stakeholder and telephone communication
- Document management and record-keeping
- Team collaboration and independent working
Her Advice to Future Apprentices
Rachel is generous with what she has learned. For anyone considering a similar path, she has clear guidance: come in with an open mind, stay organised, and never be afraid to ask questions. Confidence, she says, builds naturally through the work, you don’t need to have it on day one.
It's okay to feel nervous and a bit overwhelmed when entering your first full-time job. With time, your knowledge will increase and your confidence will rise naturally. Speaking up is a key part of learning — it's how you build both competence and trust in a workplace."
A Distinction and a Career
Rachel completed her Business Administrator apprenticeship with a Distinction, the highest grade available. She is now a permanent member of staff at Zenith, working as Data & Compliance Administrator, the very role she trained in, and one she has made entirely her own.
Her journey is a reminder of what the right opportunity, the right support, and the right attitude can achieve. We couldn’t be more proud of everything Rachel has accomplished.
