Thursday’s a big day. Envelopes, refreshing your phone at 8am, that stomach-drop feeling if the numbers on the screen aren’t what you were hoping for.

If that’s you, take a breath. You’re not the first person to open results that don’t match the plan, and you won’t be the last. What actually matters is what you do next, not what’s written on that piece of paper.

And to be clear before we go any further: university is still very much on the table. Clearing exists for exactly this reason, and plenty of people end up somewhere brilliant through it. This isn’t about steering you away from that. It’s about making sure you know what else is out there too, so you’re choosing your next step rather than just accepting whatever’s left.

So let’s talk about the option people don’t always think to weigh up properly: apprenticeships.

“Isn’t That Just a Backup Option?”

Nope. And it’s worth saying that clearly, because a lot of people still think apprenticeships are the consolation prize, something you settle for if university’s off the table.

They’re not a backup. They’re a genuinely different way in. You get paid, you train on the job, and you walk away with real experience and a qualification employers actually recognise, no three years of lectures and no student loan hanging over you at the end of it.

Some of the most capable people we work with chose this route on purpose, not because their results forced their hand.

What It Actually Looks Like

Strip away the jargon and it’s simple: you work for a company, they train you, and a chunk of your time goes towards a recognised qualification, often up to degree level depending on the sector. You’re earning from day one. You’re building a CV that says “did the job” rather than “wrote essays about the job.”

It’s not all shadowing someone with a clipboard, either. Depending on the industry, you could be on-site, in a workshop, in an office, learning trades, tech, engineering, business, care. The list is long, and it’s growing.

Okay, But Is It Right for Me?

Genuinely, that depends on you. Some people thrive with hands-on learning and want to be earning while they figure things out. Others want the university experience, and that’s completely fair too. Neither one is the “smart” choice with the other as fallback. They’re just different roads, and both can get you somewhere good.

Worth giving both a proper look before you decide, rather than picking whichever one feels most familiar.

If You’re a Parent Reading This

You’ll want to fix it, or at least make it feel less painful. Honestly, the best thing you can do today is not panic in front of them. Let them process it first. Then, when they’re ready, help them look at the full picture, university and apprenticeships both, rather than steering them straight back to the original plan because it feels safer.
